Getting my V6 L60 back on the road

Didn’t he write, her partner didn’t make it?:
…the male passenger was dead on the ground…
That would be quite tragic, once his daughter finds out. It’s bad enough that she has to go through with having gotten severely injured

Have just looked in on the thread. Geoff - mate!!! My best wishes and prayers to your daughter and grandkids for a speedy and full recover.

OK, I can’t believe the assumptions the media have made.
No one was ejected or died at the scene. Only person who had massive head injuries was her partner who never wore a seatbelt.

On a good note my granddaughter is up and about, two casts not slowing her down which is a problem :smiling_face_with_tear: needs to rest a bit
The grandson is fine and got away with nothing in the end. Thanks to a decent safety seat

My daughter is ok, still waiting for her shoulder to get put back together.
They did a great job on her knee and are trying to get her to use it already. Only has half a kneecap left tho.

The partner on the other hand is on life support in a coma with little chance. He made a few bad decision and ended up there. Should have worn a seatbelt, should have gotten the bottle for his son instead of making my daughter get it.
And thats why I think she got the injuries she had, stretching to reach a bottle when the airbags have deployed and smashed her shoulder.

Also very suss on the truck driver, left the scene without getting tested and refused medical help for a bad gash. Left pretty quickly… And the skid marks from the truck turn into the center of the road… Hopefully forensics have it all together

Thanks for sharing. Some good news in there. So glad the grandkids are going to mend and all the best for your daughter’s recovery. Partner, oh dear! Truck driver in this instance = scumbag (They aren’t all bad, I have many truckie friends and drove 20t pantechs myself one time).
…the truck driver, left the scene without getting tested and refused medical help…
Assuming tested for alcohol and/or drug abuse? Over here in Germany, even if he wasn’t at fault for the accident, that’s still serious business which could end up with a driver’s license suspension and hefty fine. the suspension alone could cost him his employment. Leaving the scene of an accident before emergencey crews show up is even more serious, if no effort was made to care for the victims, before taking flight

Ok, been a while since I’ve posted anything but slowly been getting back into it.

Life has been chucking its usual problems at me plus a few out of left field but I’ve come to conclusion of stuff every thing else, I need to be happy first so I’m trying to get this thing back on the road by Xmas (hopefully) so I can enjoy it. I’m also trying to get back into some sort of social life as my mental state allows me.

As for the car I’ve been stripping the front end and cleaning up what’s rusted in the past decade. Mostly it’s why was left after being burnt and with no real protection between the joints and a bit of moisture rotted it out.

Replaced the inner guards at the top and around the lights. Fixed a lot of panel damage from the catch fencing. Replaced the passenger sill panel and need to the drivers

Finished fitting jag steering column and revised my steering. Moved the rack to the front which would have been easy if I had lhd rack. Surgery was done on the rack to say the least.
New coil overs all around. Changed my stub axles to VX commodore and fitted larger discs with the dual spot calipers.

Almost finished the rough work on the passenger side and about to tackle the rear beaver panel.

I’m planning on painting it candy apple red just for something different.

I’ll get some pictures up when I can
Cheers Geoff

Well Done mate! Yours is in much worse condition than what mine is by the look of it and glad to see your getting back into it. It will look awesome in candy apple red. If you dont get it done by christmas then remember that is ok but it will be much further along than what it was.
Looking forward to any updates.

Ok just finished off my rack mount ready for paint.
Pictures of it roughly fitted and of my jaguar column I’m using. Ignore the quick release as I no longer need it after discovering the standard mk 2 jag column has factory adjustment for the column length . Quite neat too, undo the large nut and pull or push the wheel to where you want it, then tighten it back up .
It will make it a little easier to get in and out and I can delete a quick release as that’s a headache for registration

That’s brilliant feature to have on such an older car.

I’ve had the column for a few years and only figured that bit out about a month ago. Something I never thought to even look for on it. Even stuffing around with a couple of peoples jags over years I never knew it existed.

Well I fitted the foldable panel with slight mods to finish my floor and give me the little rack. Not that there’s a lot you can get in back but with a new fuel tank that will sit flush you can get a few bags of shopping in there

And for anyone taking notice I finally got the last bar of my cage fitted in after over ten years.

And it’s coming up to 15 years since I started this little project.

Passenger side of the car is starting to come together for panel fitting and adjustments. Need to do a mount for the bottom guard bolt still.

Starting on the rear bodywork. Replacing the rear beaver panel. Second last panel to replace from the original car that burnt. Only the wiper cowl is left. Car of Theseus I guess

Rear tailgate need some rust repairs and this was the best of two.

I’ve been stripping the panels to see what’s under all the paint and being surprised it’s reasonably good .
Doing the bonnet and tailgate now

I can’t wait (obviously I can but I don’t want to) to see this running again. So much work with the next iteration of the project.

Trying to get it running again by Christmas if anything goes the way I need to.

It’s become my stress relief from all my other life issues and and major burst of work is usually me working out my frustrations so the way my life’s going it might be sooner..

Anyhow repaired the passenger door and done a bit of file finishing in the guard to remove all the little dents

Pusshed the little thing out today to turn it around so did a quick walk around , haven’t watched it cause I hate my voice
And of cause a storm decided to roll in when I was half way through, got it in before it hit at least.\

With redoing all the repairs the proper way will probably save me a few kilos in weight too, plus this is the last time Im doing it so I’m taking everything back to metal. I have found it necessary tho as I have found surface rust under the factory paint that has been sealed off but will be an issue further down the line if any moisture gets to it.
Should last a few years, first car I did still had good paint and panel many years after going through a lot of hands

Here is the bonnet after stripping and you will see the brown dots everywhere that are surface rust that wasnt visable in the paint. Looking at when stripping and the age of the car and knowing what happended to rolled steel products back when we exprted them at that time that japanesse manufaturers started stockpilling raw coils out in the open until the needed to use them. A lot of the panels from japan around the late 70’s to late 80’s possibly into the 90’s where stored like this giving them factory rust. They treated it and them primed and painted the panels with no visual affect from it. Having worked on a lot of Jap cars in the late 80’s and 90’s you would notice this.
All in all it had little difference to anyone over the engineered life of the car. Just a pain later on. You get some panels that have holes all through them that have rusted from the reverse and found the easy spots where the surface rust already is and break through there.

Just having an old man ramble for anyone interested

Oh and one year of Datsun 1600’s delivered to NSW all had hail damage as the whole shipment was sitting outside in a hailstorm waiting to be sold
