I drive a Toyota Duet (Daihatsu Storia). The engine is a K3-VE2. This engine has blown once. The current engine specifications are a 3SZ-FE engine head, a K3-VE2 intake cam, and a 3SZ-FE exhaust cam. I’m thinking of turbocharging this engine in the future. If you have any advice, please let me know!!
Getting a safe tune is key. My opinion is you’d want a stand alone ecu with wideband O2 and maybe knock control.
As Mr G said, aftermarket ecu and a safe tune and beware that your gearbox may not hold up also.
Thanks for the advice If you have any recommended ECUs please let me know!
Thanks for the advice If you know of a stronger transmission please let me know!
Here on the Gold Coast in Australia I’d use Motec or Haltech. I’ve only ever owned Haltech, Microtech and Autronic. But that was due to having a local tuner who is an expert in these. That’s what you need to do, find a place that will tune it for you. Let’s say you buy a Motec (they are one of the best by a long way) and then you can’t tune it or find someone to do it for you. If you are computer savy then with the wideband feedback you could road tune it yourself, esp if you have someone to drive while you fiddle with a laptop in the passenger seat. Some long step hills help to road test as you can get a load on the car without having to do really high speed runs. If you might be interested in tuning yourself then have a look at the software that comes with various ecu.

I would convert it over to a 4-speed automatic, if it hasn’t already got one
Compact Motorsport from NZ (who deals regularly with Japan) has some strengthened gearboxes.

As @TPG said look at compact motor sport for gears for your transmission or see if they have a gearbox to suit.
This is just based on what I’ve heard, so I can’t say for sure, but it seems that both the 3SZ and the K3-VET engine blocks are equipped with oil jets for piston cooling. So, if you’re sticking with the 1.3L displacement, using VE2 pistons in a VET block might help prevent piston skirt collapse. Also, since the VET block is made for turbo applications, it has a reinforced trochoid oil pump, which increases oil flow—another advantage in that sense.
The problem is that the VET block is rare and incredibly expensive…
As for the gears, I think the best option is to go with the ones already offered by Compact Motorsports. But in Japan, KC Technica also makes custom close-ratio gear sets for the Copen, which uses the same transmission internals, so that could be a viable option too.
By the way—this is totally unrelated—but the Duet doesn’t have that alien-looking front face, right? Was that swapped out on purpose? Personally, I prefer this face.
Any advice would be appreciated This alien face was only on sale for about a year. The mission is KC Technica after all.
