Hello everyone. We’ve owned a 1980 Charade G10 for the past 40 years (my father owned it even before I was born). The car is now in pension and only used for an occasional joy ride every now and then.
A big challenge I’m facing is to find parts to keep the Charade going. The car has drum brakes all round, and finding parts for the front brakes is a nightmare as in most countries the front brakes are disc brakes.
I am currently on the lookout for the parts needed to convert my Charade to have front disc brakes namely the front knuckles, hubs, disc brake and calliper. If anyone happens to have the parts or can guide me to somewhere from where I can source them, ideally in Europe, I’d really appreciate the help.
That’s a great-looking Charade. I don’t remember ever seeing any of these styled that way.
Converting to front disks isn’t soley a matter of substituting knuckles and discs. It’s much more complex, requiring a replacement master cylinder, proportioning valve and rear drum brake assemblies.
If you can’t find an entire donor vehicle, it would be much simpler to have your brake linings relined, either fastened with rivets or glued-on
That’s interesting. I know about having to replace the master cylinder but didn’t think I’d need more than that.
The problem I have at the front is that the drum brake have warped and they don’t have enough material to engineer them round again. I’ve been trying to look for new ones for years but couldn’t find any.
if I’m correct, then they list two different drums, one specifies that they are rear fitment, and one does not specify. I will take a chance that the non-specified ones might be front fitment. Assuming so, Autodoc lists that they are interchangable with several other makes/models including:
HYUNDAI Pony Hatchback (X-2) (Year of Construction 10.1989 - 01.1995)
HYUNDAI Pony / Excel Saloon (X-2) (Year of Construction 09.1989 - 01.1995)
HYUNDAI S-Coupé (SLC) (Year of Construction 02.1990 - 05.1996)
It also lists EAN part numbers, and TRW Friction part numbers:
Some of that might help? Or, if you can get the part number from your existing front drums, let me know and I can use my Google-fu to try and get some alternatives. Daihatsu as a general rule use standard components from Toyota parts bins where possible. I would guess that if you can find a part number then there will be plenty of options from the wider Dai/Toyota range that will work.
Here is a link to a competitively-priced source. You’d have to be carefull, if ordering from RSU, though. If they send you the wrong part, they will refuse both its return and refunding your payment:
Thanks for your time in looking into this! I came across this while doing my research but I’m doubtful how compatible they really are with the Charade’s break as the measurements seem to be off from what I have.
Looking at the measurements of the Hyundai drum, the overall height of the drum is 72mm and the outer diameter is 216mm. The PCD for the Hyundai is 114.3mm.On the Charade, the overall height of the drum is a shy more than 55mm while the total diameter is around 230mm. PCD for the Charade is 110mm
