Ko the Cuore (L701) [Sold]

In an effort to relocate the rear fog light to the inside of left tail light, I made a quick adapter that connects the original plug to one of the twist fittings in the tail.

Nothing fancy but should work, right? Sadly no. I used the fittings from a European facelift tail but the Gino fittings are different.

Not only are they bigger in size, the clamps are different. So in an effort to still make the plan work I ordered a scrap Gino tail light from Japan.

In the meantime @Aaron made some custom stuff for the shifter mechanism that should sort out the last bit of play. Will be testing this kit on mine on a trip to Spain .

Installed all the shifter parts today. It’s hard to express in words how good driving feels. Selecting gears is really precise and stiff, but not clunky. In gear play is reduced, but not zero. I’ll see if I can pick up an L251 shifter to help out with that a bit.

While accelerating you can feel some engine vibrations in the car now but that was to be expected. It’s nice (to me) to feel the engine. Everything around this car has always been about making a direct and stiff experience. This modification sure takes the cake in that regard.

I’m still testing these mods but if you are interested in a kit you should contact @Aaron

Road trip

I took the Cuore on a little road trip to Spain! 2700km and some more while staying there; Clocking in around 3000km.

She did well, hills and mountains were no problem. Not even a noticeable amount of oil was burned. Even after the trip back which was 14 hours with a max of 10 minute breaks to fuel up.

Mileage was pretty good averaging around 1:22 (4.5l/100km) over the whole trip. Very impressive considering elevation and all. EJ-DE go brrr indeed.

It was fun to see people react to a small car with Dutch plates driving all the way over there; quite some thumbs up on the way and some other cool reactions in Spain.

I’m not even sure they sold the Cuore over there. Wouldn’t that be ironic with a Spanish name… The only Daihatsus I’ve seen on the way was a Sirion 2 on Dutch plates in Belgium and a Rocky in Spain!

It seems small cars are not super popular over there in cities. Some small Korean and Chinese trucks were used in Barcelona to supply stores in the small-ish streets though.

The trip was very comfortable, even with bucket seats. I think the bucket seat is easier to drive in for hours than the original seat. Cruise control would be nice I guess, but it was doable. Hours before I left I got newly fit A/C system charged and lo and behold; no leaks and it’s ice cold.

Only 4 and a half litres with the air conditioner turned on is not bad

@Wolff happened to find a 3rd brake light for me so the ugly hole is filled .

I’ll wire it later, I’m just glad I have a brake light that fits.

Also here’s a pic of my rack.

So maybe I’ll fit power steering some time, but I’m not sure yet.

The last piece of the TR puzzle… It sucks?

Weirdly in R30… Just the colour I want. But that’s for the future so I’ll just paint it silver for now! Ready for a base coat :ok_hand:

Quickly primed the plate garnish as well as It’s been unpainted on the car for ages

I’ve been driving around on lowering springs on the stock struts for a while now since one of my top mount links broke on the selfmade set. Those coils were pretty good for the price but overall it wasn’t the best. Beside that I had no way to lower or adjust the rear.

I did what I said I didn’t want to do. Buy a set of BC Racing coilovers. Why? I was done with trying all these make-shift options and getting mediocre results. The set was more expensive than the car, but oh well. It’s not like I can still make the “cheap car excuse” after what I’ve done to it :eyes:

(I should do something about that brake cover yikes)

Overall the quality seems to be really good. Better than expected if I’m honest. I like the colours as well, pretty.
They were easy to install with some friends and do a few test fits before we tighten everything down. I put mine 3cm above the minimum setting, so I still have some play. But I think the height looks good now.

As for the driving experience; wow. Cornering is just amazing. What a go-kart.
The rear is a tad stiff right now so I’ll have to adjust that a bit and see what I like. It’s set halfway but the rear is super light so no wonder. The front is on the full stiffness setting. Love it. I’ll have to get used to it for a bit and test it out. I’m still holding back as I’m not able to predict the car well just yet.

Some more updates coming soon!

This weekend a friend helped me weld up the last couple of spots!

Protected everything after. I’m going to take some time to redo some of the undercoating in those places later. there’s still some work to do to make the inside pretty, but it’s good enough for now.

At least there’s no puddle of water in the back of the Cuore after I drive in the rain!

I also had the chance to drive around his Copen! What a joy to drive. Words can’t express how much I want one.

BTW, does this count as a shoe test? I think I passed.

Somehow I’m still alive. I’ve been enjoying the ride a lot. Literally, but also figuratively . The BC coilovers are truly something else, what a worthy upgrade for this little car.

Especially after driving a mostly stock Cuore to work a few times. After a while you take the upgrades for granted. Big reality check.

I’ve mostly been working on my Astra lately, which is basically ready for inspection before I can drive it on the road again.

But in the meantime, I did a few small things. Somehow noteworthy: I swapped out the throttle body for one I touched up; cleaned up and new gaskets.

Also I bought a Cuore which most of you probably already know; Dave :upside_down_face:.

I’ll tackle a few visual points. But new brakes and timing belt/water pump are also scheduled. After that he’ll be my mother’s daily.

As I’ve said, I’ve been enjoying the ride a lot, because it seems today will be my last day with Ko.
…I’m going to take some time to redo some of the undercoating…
My experience with undercoating is that it retains moisture within the carriage. Especially, at seams where one piece of sheetmetal is welded to another. At these joints, it’s not rainwater which enters. But rather, condensating moisture produced by surrounding air cooling down overnight from within. I have simply melted off undercoating at these joints and will avoid driving my vehicle through salted roads in winter

Well, she’s sold. But I’m not leaving the Daihatsu world

… is what I posted here some time ago. But guess what!
