L276 broken rear axle

Hello guys,

I’m rather new in the Daihatsu universe and recently bought a Daihatsu L276 here in Germany (introduction will follow  ).

The online market places are full of Daihatsu L276 with broken rear axles. It is also a known structural issue and there are some cases in the German Dai forum.

The axle of my L276 already broke in the past and was welded by the previous owner. After some spirited driving the rear axle seems to be in the process of breaking again (one wheel has positive camber, the other wheel has negative camber, the steering wheel is crooked and the stability control is going crazy). Now I need to fix it, before I can drive it again.

The main reason for this issue seems to be faulty design, which leads to internal rust damage and part failure.

Do you guys have any experience with this problem?

Most people just recommend changing the rear axle, doing some rust protection and to hope for the best…

I primarily bought the car to do some modifications (wheels, brake upgrade, lowering springs) and to enjoy the kart feeling of such a light chassis. But I’m quite sure a new axle would also break at some point, especially if I use it as a wannabe sports car.

Has anybody reinforced their rear axle to prevent this from happening again?

Thanks in advance.

I will also add some pictures in the following days.

Greetings

Markus
