New (old) Daihatsu Mira L500

Hello all,

My name is Lucas and I live in the United States. I just recently bought a 1997 Daihatsu Mira that was imported from Japan. It was a lengthy process of getting the car registered but I finally took the car home and I’m ready to start building.

The last few weeks have been very stressful as it’s been a challenge to find any resources online that would help me figure out specs about this car but to my knowledge this is what I know.

Engine: EF-FL

Transmission: 4 speed Manual

**…**and yeah that’s about it.

My biggest question would have to be about wheels, I plan on changing them out and would like to know what my options are. I believe that my bolt pattern is 4x110, which sucks because wheels that size here aren’t super available. I also am unsure of what size to run, I plan to lower the car but don’t want it slammed, and I don’t want to have issues with rubbing.

My other concern at the moment is maintenance, I’ve found some pretty good info out there and have a good idea of what part #’s to buy for maintenance parts. I would like to do timing belt and tensioner, I’m just not sure where I can find that part online. My serpentine belt is squeaking too so I would like to replace the belt and any tensioners there also.

Other than all that I’m excited to start this project and have it ready for spring/summer. My plans are to paint the car, lower it and put some wheels on it, and have some fun with the interior. That being said I am on the hunt for the wing off the avantzato or something similar, I think it adds a lot of depth to the look of the car. Any ideas for styling or what wheels might look good I’m all ears as I don’t have the slightest clue at the moment.

It was a huge relief to stumble into the forum during my research, and I’ll happily post my build as it comes along.

Cheers,

Lucas (1997 Daihatsu Mira L500)

Welcome to the forum,

Awesome L5 very similar to the L2 but a rounder body. The good news is, there is a lot of parts for it that are compatible from the L2 and the L6. Mainly engine gearbox, wheels brakes etc. The bolt pattern of 4x110 is a pain in the butt. There are ways to change it and there is info on the forum of how to. You may not want to go the route and depending on the laws etc where you are you may opt for adapter’s. For wheels 13 or 14 inch is about spot on. From memory they are 38+ in offset. Japan’s Yahoo auctions is a great for looking for cool stuff and also Malaysia is great as they have heaps of parts also. @NikMF is someone used a lot for getting parts from Malaysia and has a good reputation.

Have a look at some build threads and you may get some good ideas.
