O2 Sensor Replace & Reset Light

So, I am restoring a 1992 Rocky and the O2 Sensor light was illuminated on the dash. I read that at 80,000 miles (this light has been on for “years” by previous owner ) the light is triggered as a reminder to replace the O2 sensor. I ordered the best O2 sensor I could find and replaced the old one. Dash light still on. Disconnected the battery for an hour while working on the vehicle, reconnected the battery and…light still comes on. Then I thought it might be that drive cycles clear the light, many drive cycles later, no! I look in service manual, no reset procedure noted. Look around online and find a reference “remove the bulb”! Must I actually remove half the dashboard to remove the bulb to not have the O2 Sensor warning light on? Please say no :beer_mug:!!!

I found the answer (the answer I didn’t want to hear)! On page BE-25 of the 1992 Rocky service manual there are three NOTICE points:

3. …The 80,000 mile sensor switch has been so constructed that it is necessary to remove the bulb of the O2S warning lamp to extinguish the O2S warning.

Good grief, and I thought Corvettes were designed irrationally! They don’t even say if you replace the bulb for the next O2 sensor 80k mile change.

If you haven’t yet started pulling the instrument pod, I’d attempt unplugging the harness connecting that pod. Doing so should break the bulb’s circuit also. That is, if there’s enough room for getting access to it. The board computer shouldn’t be able to tell at which point the bulb’s circuit was severed.

Here’s what the back of the pod should look like. That harness pointed out isn’t the one to pull. It’s for selector lights, when equipped with an automatic transmission.

You would have to pinch the connector quite hard, when pulling, because they can be quite stiff

Thanks for the idea Butch, much appreciated :+1:! I haven’t pulled the dash apart yet, but I may today. The service manual says to pull the steering wheel first, but I believe that isn’t necessary to either disconnect the board or pull the bulb. I’ll give it a try and report back my findings, if I survive being a contortionist .

Alright, job is done. Steering wheel does NOT have to come out to work on any of the warning lights or dash lights. A bunch of screws and presto, pull the gauge module towards you and you can see the back of the gauge panel. Pull the O2 sensor light and done. Do not put the bulb back in thinking removing the bulb resets the 80k mile reminder (like I did). Just put the holder back in and throw the bulb in the glove box.
