Sirion 1.5 VSC problem?

Hey all,

Since a couple of weeks I hear a grinding noice while turning. It happens when I’m driving 50kmh + and happens on the left side. When the grinding starts the VSC/traction light flashes and when the grinding stops the lights dissapear. You can also feel the brake pedal pulsating as if the brake pressure changes.

At first I thought there was something wrong with the brakes etc but noting to be found. Changed the brake caliper and the problem still persists. I checked everything and nothing grinds/everything looks normal.

Now in trying things I found out that when I remove the fuse from the ABS2 the grinding and noice stops. When I turn the traction control off the grinding still happens. So I think it has something to do with the VSC thinking im going into a spin when I turn.

Since this is the only Daihatsu I know which has this system and traction control, I’m not sure how the system works exactly. I assumed it worked in combination with the ABS sensors but since I have no problems with the ABS and that light never flashes I’m not sure if the VSC uses the same sensors.

Does anyone have any experience with this problem or how the VSC system works? I tried finding a wiring diagram but it doesn’t seem to be present on the forum.

Just a thought, but could it be that there is a miscommunication between a steering input sensor and the VSC?

I’m just brainstorming at this moment… A true sign of despiration xD

Are you able to check the sensor ring? could be missing a tooth or something. Yes if the steering angle sensor isnt calibrated or malfunctioning the abs could be triggered. When u say grinding is that just the abs engaging the brakes?

I’ll go check the steering sensor. I’ve changed the steering wheel to a Momo from another sirion. So I might have damages it somehow. Is the yellow sensor ring behind the steeringwheel also for the steering input or only for the airbags?

I don’t think it’s the abs that’s trying to brake. On another sirion one of the abs sensors was a bit iffy so sometimes the abs came on but not in this case. This car never had problems with the brakes before (apart from one caliper being stuck). The traction control is flashing when the grinding starts and sometimes the VSC light also come on.

The ring yes also contains the steering angle sensor, there usually is a ribbon cable in there that can snap, if u don’t have it centered and turn too much in one direction.

Checked the ring and nothing seems wrong. Turned it round like the instructions said. So it seems I have to dig deeper. Will keep you posted but it might take some time before I can continue.

Sometimes the abs pump also fails.
Ate pumpd do have this common issue when they age

Never really thought about the abs as the problem since the abs light never comes on. But I do think that it’s an option I shouldn’t ignore. When I’m finished with the trailer I’ll tear the car down. Going on a vacation next month so I really hope to find something…

Okay so I’ve also changed the ABS sensor and still no solution. So it really must be one of the many computers stuffed under the dashboard that seems that be causing the problem.

Sigh

Does your car has a ATE abs pump?

If yes need to be refurbished.

Common problem with these when getting 15years+ is the pump pistons inside the abs pump will get stuck.

I have friends materia (same as sirion2) had to repair the abs pump

Before doing this repair find/ lend/pay a diagnose guy to read it out the abs pump

Went to the only Daihatsu “dealer” in the area and asked them what they thought. They also expected this part. Luckily the wreckers here had a 1.5 sirion so got the part. Now I need to make some time available to replace it. Thanks for your input!

I want to buy your old pump to see whats broke

You can have it for free if you want.

Just replaced the pump but now the VSC and traction control lights stay on. ABS works and the strange braking noises stoped so it seems like its better than before but I can’t clear the codes with a OBD2 scanner since it’s CANBUS.

So will wait till after the holiday to go back to the garage to let them clear the codes and I hope that it is fixed after that.

disconnecting the battery wont help?

Nope, needed tot remove the battettray etc to even get to the pump. Lights go out and within a second they are back on again. Doesn’t matter if you start the car, press the brake or do something else.

Drove 200k+ last night and the brakes still work, abs still works and no leakage.

need diagnose then

Okay since Daihatsu decided to use different abs pumps in the same car the codes for traction controle and vsc won’t clear. You need exactly the same pump not just one from another 1.5. Mine was a B1110 and now it’s a B1140. Luckily ABS still works so I’ll keep it this way.

Sometimes is really don’t understand car manufacturers.

Check abs pump.itself. ecu of vsc and abs is in the pump. Pcb board fails after 15years. I did last.time buying a pump used and it failed also after 3 years so time to refurbish no corner cutting
