Hey everyone, I’m Tom from Sydney, Australia. Just picked up my first Daihatsu, a 1997 Daihatsu Mira TR-XX Avanzato R L502S with the JB,JL engine and I’m already hooked on these kei cars. Looking forward to learning more about the platform, sourcing parts, and restoring/modifying it properly.
Also chasing some advice from anyone local in Australia on the best places to source front CV shafts/CVs for these cars, or interchangeable parts that fit the L502S platform. Excited to be part of the LiveToDai community.
Front suspension for your gen Trxx is shared with the standard L5, L2 and L6. Rear trailing arms are shared between L2 and L5, though if you have the rare rear disc you will have to hunt around for bits on YAJ project Mu does make brake pads though I’m unsure of the disc / hub assembly as they don’t exist in Aus.
If you could take a photo of your rear disc that would be very interesting, as they don’t exist here on ADM Mira’s. Though can be made from parts. You may also have the rare rear factory sway bar which came alongside rear disc trailing arms. Bushings for these can be bought from Aaron at AIS on Facebook. Front bushings are a lower arm replacement, and sway bar are shared with M100 sirion so can be bought on eBay.
Axles will be a YAJ part only unfortunately, though if suggest pulling them out and replacing the boots (eBay special sirion ones will fit) and cv grease as they’ll last longer if serviced.
Rear and front shocks are identical to L2,L5,L6, though not L7,L880k,M100 as they need to be modified to fit the front spindles as the bolt pcd changes between different knuckles (you can file the lower hole slightly to make them fit but that’s up to you). For cheap stock replacement rear shocks use Suzuki jimny 98-2017 shocks as they’re identical to factory Mira ones.
Front coil overs can be made by using AE9X corolla base height adjustable ones, though you will want to change the spring rate on the front from the 8kg/mm to 4kg/mm or 6kg/mm if you have it quite low. in my experience 8kg/mm is far too stiff for these light cars.
Rear shorter shock Hyundai i20 shocks can be used and you’ll have to source some lowering springs from YAJ or RHD Japan.
If you choose to go for a bosskit to replace the steering wheel you can buy the cheap eBay available one for L5,L2 mira’s or also have the option to use any Toyota 1980’s steering boss. I have a 1982 RA65 Celica short boss in my L5, AE86 does also fit.
