only way to go is a decent electrical generator to power the vehicle, with batteries are a reserve.
Why not have a small gas turbine running a generator powering a high power electric motor?
Gas turbines are highly efficient and run on just about anything.

Hans Tholstrup was flagged - off by NSW Minister for Roads Mr. Paciullo at the Opera House today for around Australia journey with Diesel engine Daihatsu. The consumption of car supposed to be 100 mpg (2.38L/100km). January 29, 1984.
