I think the trailing arms on the awd are inward about 1cm more than the 2wd but not 100% sure, will have to check. Unfortunately I don’t know the offset on the 15x7s, its not stamped anywhere on the rims from what I can see
ok guys time for an update
quick one on the 15x7s, had another look and I can see a 38 stamped on I guess they probably have a +38 offset…
still beating around the bush with this TUV crap. This guy is bloody hard to get ahold of, but our TUV guy has pretty much said fuck it if all else fails he will give me TUV even with the awd conversion but it wont be listed on the rego papers so if I ever have a bad accident or something ill end up in the shit.
But im over it so im going to do the conversion anyway and if/when I ever get in touch with the other engineer from TUVNord I will get it properly approved.
Will start work on it this Saturday, going to do the rear end first. Ive already been to the hardware store and picked up supplies to build a dolly to put under the arse end of the blue car once I rob the rear axle ect. from it. Got 4 heavy duty castor wheels rated at 70kg each and a decent slab of wood to build the dolly, I figure the rear end cant be too much more than 280kg, so the dolly should suffice for rolling it in and out of the workshop.
I only have 5 maybe 6 hours if im lucky at the shop Saturday so Im hoping its enough time to drop the axle and install it in the red car, the k frame/motor/box will have to be the following Saturday (I hope, it will depend on weather or not we have 2 free hoists) and probably one more Saturday for the minor stuff like tail shaft, linkages, fuel tank, wiring and plumbing ect.
Once I start I will make an actual build thread and also a detailed wiki for anyone else who wants to do the conversion.
right now im looking at copen brake calipers on ebay and I will probably order some.
And the most important question:
What model applause do people get the rear brakes from?
I may have found some, there is some guy on ebaykleinanzeigen.de (kind of like a german version of gumtree) who is wrecking a bunch of daihatsus, I have emailed him asking if he has any applause there with rear discs and he replied saying he thinks he has some but will have to check and get back to me.
the first model Applause, A101a as the second gen, A101b, went back to the rear drums
38 minus you’d know, would be really dished
Remember mx5 are the same rear caliper casting but have a variety of bigger diameter pistons
Would love to duck over and help out, might have to Google maps the address and see how far it is
Leher Heerstraße 72, Bremen, Germany.
Your welcome to come and help out as much as you like Mr G
Might have to catch a few ferries but i think its possible to come up through asia, would be an awesome road trip
I wish they were -38, fit them up with some monster flares
he had A101 listed as one of the models he was wrecking but im not sure if it was an a or b…
also on another note, has anyone ordered parts from muduh.my before?
Getting anything sent from Malaysia can be a real pain. Talk to Bob Fudge on the Diahatsu Performance Enthusiasts facebook page. He has a contact in Malaysia that will send (to the UK and Australia so far) 4-1 and 4-2-1 extractors for the k3.
yeah I have seen him mention he has a guy for this in some comments on the Daihatsu rally facebook page. This add has a number for whats app so I was going to send him a message when the time comes and see what he says but if it turns into too much of a headach ill get onto bob and organise it through him.
just gotta pump out one more day then its it weekend and I can start on the build, really looking forward to it!
@Mr_Gormsby here are some pics of the AWD rear springs.
I completely forgot to count how many coils (total brain fart haha) but I will do that Monday, then calculate what the factory spring rate is. But one end is open, one end is closed and in the pics are the dimensions.
Maybe you have something there that will do the job, if so please send me info, part numbers or whatever you have. I have heard front springs from a MKII escort fit straight in, have a 220lb spring rate and retain factory ride height so maybe some lowering springs from eibach or something will bring it down enough to match the front and be a bit stiffer again. But this information came from facebook and I am yet to confirm.
aaaaannnnddddd I just realised you can see how many coils the spring has in the photo.
another brain fart haha
I saw that info on the rally sirion fb page. Grab a hold of any said Escort spring and measure to confirm
http://siberianbushing.com/catalog/DAIHATSU/JAPAN/STORIA/M112/2002
I have heard people say there isn’t really any aftermarket bushes available for the sirion, found this, they are coming from Russia so not sure how good the quality is but ill give them a go and let you know
Rubber bushes twist in rubber to get lateral/twist and radial movement. The urathane will twist in the urathane but the radial part where a suspension member goes up and down needs the urathane to spin around the shaft. This is why they provide lube. Now you prob know all of that. The suggestion is to drill and tap for a grease nipple or else pull them apart every so often to grease.
yeah grease nipple is a great idea but im not sure if these pivot between the crush tube and the bush or the bush and the trailing arm.
They are expensive too, 22 euro each! but ive had a look while I was at work and our suppliers don’t have any, there isn’t anything else on ebay and I think even if someone was wrecking one theres a good chance they would have the same problem when they went to pull it off.
The mrs is asleep so I think now is the perfect time to order some, and she will never know I spent more money on the car
they are coming from st Petersburg so I rekon they’ll get here a lot quicker than anything from japan too
ok bushes are ordered, should be here in about 2 weeks. I guess if they are any good ill probably replace all of them
So the factory rear springs on the awd have a spring rate of approx. 100lb
The front springs from the mkII escort have similar dimensions however the diameter is 4.75 inch (the original springs are about 4.3 inch) and the spring rate is 145lb.
So I guess the escort springs wouldn’t be too much of an improvement
@Mr_Gormsby you said if you knew the factory spring rate you could help determine what spring rate I should aim for, what do you think I should go for now that we know factory is about 100lb?
found something, front springs from a second gen 2wd Mitsubishi L200 (sold as Mighty Max in Europe and the US) free length 11 inches (28cm), I.D 3.42 inches (8.7cm), spring rate 435lb.
so about 2cm shorter, I.D is basically the same, only 3mm smaller but should fit fine, and they have one open end and one closed end the same as the factory springs!
Looks like I might be onto a winner here
What’s the front rate? You need to know that to balance things out. A 50% increase with the Escort springs is in the right direction. Should be common.
ok, im not sure what the front rate is, ill have to do some research but I know the eibachs aren’t fixed rate so it might be tricky to calculate
