My thoughts also, maybe the cam timing is out, another thought I had was if the timing marks for the cam sensor are the same between both engines…

Actually, I’ve got a EJDE head in the shed so I could compare the timing marks with my EFGL.

I had the timing belt tensioner off to get to a water pump housing bolt behind it and I used a cable tie to hold the belt together so it wouldn’t slip off. I’m 100% sure the belt didn’t move but it’s something to look at so I can rule it out.

The cam gear on both the EJ and EF are the same, same teeth count and same timing mark.
The EF one has 2 stamped on it and the EJ has 4.
Both cam sensor timing disks behind the gear have a single tab, single tab and a double tab.

And the cam timing is also correct?

I can’t check that till the weekend when I’ve got more time, after work doesn’t give me much time before it’s dark.

I’ll also have to work out how to use my traditional timing light gun which clamps to a spark plug lead.

Just out of curiosity, what are the what looks to be timing marks on the sandwich plate between the engine and gearbox? Is that where you use the gun rather than the traditional location at the crankshaft pulley at the front?

Yes, flywheel marks are where you shoot the timing light.

Thanks mate, that’s a first for me seeing them at the other end of the engine.

Houston, we have a problem…

dont go by that pulley take it off and go by the actual cogged crank shaft pulley it will have a dot on it and it lines up with a mark about 3-4 o clock when looking at it direct on. That could be a good indication it is out though.

Ah okay, it’s just when the little V on the crankshaft pulley is sitting between those 2 lines on the timing belt cover, piston 1 is at TDC.

I took the crank pulley off anyway and found the dot, found the marker about 5 o’clock .
Set it correctly and set the cam gear to it’s marker, but no matter how hard I tried either the crank, cam or both pulleys moved when I did the belt tensioner.
Got frustrated and angry so I packed up after 3 hours.

yeh it can be tricky and I have been there b4 also . If its just off a bee’s willy it should be fine I as long as its not like a whole tooth out.

Right, so I managed to align both camshaft and crankshaft.

It started and ran the longest for about 5 mins, again just barely idling before dieing.

Before it started running for mins at a time I took a video of the extra smoke coming out of the head.

Ended up pulling the fuel rail too and fitting a coke bottle to each injector and cranked it over to make sure the injectors flowed the same, they did. Might need a service kit for the injectors tho, two of them kept blowing off the rail each time the fuel pump primed.

Something different though, the throttle had no affect on it this time. Rather than die straight away like last time, this time I could open it 100% and there was zero affect on the engine.
I have a spare TPS I can swap with to see if that’s a problem area.

I also swapped out the IAC with a spare I have.

@Mick I didn’t have a chance this weekend to connect up the OBD plug.

I have a 4 minute video to upload to Vimeo so I can share it here, but as I’m using the free version I have to wait a week now. Just of it running for a few minutes showing it not responding to the throttle, etc, etc.

Having thoughts of bent valves now, just have to buy a compression tester.

After coming to the conclusion that the only plug left unplugged is the green one behind the block and this possibly belongs to a knock sensor. Well, I don’t have a knock sensor on my engine, so I’m in the process of finding one. This perhaps maybe causing a limp mode scenario.

I’m not aware of any Dai running a knock sensor.

@Mr_Gormsby the pdf I’m using for EJDE ecu pin outs shows a knock sensor and the wire is a single black wire, which is what the green plug on the engine loom has hanging at the back of the block.

I can’t think of what else it could be for.

Well I’ll be. I don’t know where the knock sensor is? I’ll have a look at my engines here but I don’t remember anything remotely like such attached to the side of the block.

I think it’s where the purple arrow is in the pic above, between cylinders 2 and 3 on the back of the block. Looks like a threaded hole.

Yeah I saw the pic and have had a look at my spare engines. Nothing attached to them. I have one more to check this afternoon.
