These Golfs are my inspiration on the colour scheme…
It looks so good without the teeth now.
Why not some Japanese tank markings instead? lol
clear fender indicators I think Lukes daihatsu parts has or can get them. As for the bumper ones good luck they are hard to get in orange let alone clear, but hope you find some.
Yep, but he’s out of stock atm.
Might put some money away to get the Avanzato TRXX front and rear bars.
Need some interior bits too, better carpet, front seats, kick panels, etc. Could get them out of Japan too, well one can only dream lol.
Heading out to Clark Rubber today to see what their range of seals are like as I need new front door window seals and the weather seals that goes around the inside of the doors.
Finally got the interior roof cleaned up…
No luck at Clark Rubber for the door seals. Found the three part numbers I need on partsfan so I’ll give that a go with the local Toyota parts department.
roof looks great. makes me want to clean mine lol
Thanks mate, was one of the messier jobs with all the dried out foam falling on you then the scrapping of the old glue before hitting it with some wax and grease remover I had left over.
Those weather seals I wanted, almost $500 and that’s with two of them discontinued. Time to keep looking for generic stuff or hope I find a wrecking two door L5 that has the seals I want in good nick.
Love it! Reminds me of the 80s Ibenez guitars.
EDIT: It might be the sugar high I’m currently on talking here. But, I am really thinking of doing a splatter paint job on the valve cover and air cleaner of my valiant as I get it built up.
“LOVE IT”
Feeling gutted, went for my first test drive, just 5 mins up the road to get fuel and air.
Car drove fine, few pops from the exhaust off throttle. Got to the servo but the air bay was being used so parked up close by. That person left so I went to reverse, but instead of going back I went forward. Played around shifting gears for a few minutes before it popped into reverse. Went into the Air bay and did the tyres. Went to leave, no reverse again just forward.
Outcome is that in 1st gear position it won’t go forward, seems like something is jammed, same as 2nd.
In 3rd, well it’s sloppy as hell and feels like it’s not going into anything.
4th, it won’t even go that far at all.
In neutral it goes forward and feels like 1st gear.
In reverse it goes forward, also feels like 1st gear. The reverse lights come on when you put it in the reverse position and turn off when you take it out, but it’ll only go forward.
Now, my box is a 4sd but it’ll slot into where 5th would be, which shouldn’t happen. In that position it’ll go forward, again feels like 1st.
So it’s stuck in 1st as far as I can tell but I’m fairly confident that it’s something internal as all cables are intact and attached at both ends.
It wasn’t a joy to drive home in 1st though.
I really did feel like linking the whole thing at that point as I was hoping it was done and ready for daily driving.
At this point I don’t want to open the gearbox again. I know I’ll have to drop the subframe and take it off again sigh, but i’d ather source another manual in good nick and just bolt it on so I can finally get moving.
Sorry to hear. Sounds like a selector issue for sure. I’ve had something like that happen before. Yeah, a pain to pull the box out. While the issue is inside I would check that the shiftier and cables are not moving to far. Can’t explain it well. I have a five speed lsd box at work which is in parts because it was only getting 3rd and 4th with all other gears non selectable due to the 1-2 and 5-R shafts being stuck solid (many years dry with no oil).
Getting underneath, both shifter cables are mounted correctly and aren’t sloppy on the shifter levers.
I’ve taken both off and shifted by hand the shifter levers and 1st and 2nd feel hard to get into but the other gears feel like they slot in fine including the ghost 5th spot that’s not supposed to be there.
So it starts again…
First thing I noticed is that there’s clean gearbox oil in this circled area. Nothing above it or where the gearbox case joins, so all I can think of is there’s a leak at one of those bolts? I also noticed there’s a film of clean gearbox oil on the selector seal that took ages for me to source. Unsure if that’s leaking or it’s just collecting oil from elsewhere.
hopefully its not as painful as it always first feels when this sort of thing happens
It only really sucks bad as it happened on the first test drive, didn’t even have a chance to enjoy it.
So 29 days ago I put the L5 on jacks and that’s where it’s been since as I’ve had no motorvation to work on it, I just cbf’d to be honest.
Yesterday and today I pushed through it as much as I could and I got as far as dropping the subframe, getting the gearbox off and taking the end plate off.
I hate you
Clutch looks good
Bearing looks good
Spins freely
I showed these two worn down gears before, but they still amazingly make contact. I wonder if the gear set in my L80 gbox will fit my L5 gbox?
Goodnight
Don’t lose interest mate, you can do it!!!
If you need motivation, come see my L7 at Perth JDM Central meet Dec 13th. I’ll have my new chip lip on by then
Thanks Russ.
I’ll be trying to make time to split the gearbox this weekend to see what I did wrong during assembly. But if it looks the same as when I first assembled it I think I’ll post pics so you guys can see any problems, as I don’t know of any way else it could go together.
